A picture taken 20 November 2007 shows Achta Gamar, a wise from the Chadian village of Dankouche,5 km from the Sudanese refugees camp run by the NGO 'Eastern Chad' in Gaga, near the border with Darfur. Some cases of troubles between Chadian villagers and Darfurian refugees are recorded because of the scarecity of fire wood. The wood, essential for cooking, becomes rare and difficult to share between the 17.000 Darfurians of the Camp and the Chadian villagers around. Chad is home to about 240,000 refugees from the ethnic Darfur conflict that pits rebels against the government army and feared Arab Janjaweed militias who use scorched-earth tactics. The poor southern African nation met its food needs in 2006 for the first time in seven years following a string of poor harvests, mainly due to drought. Food security is a pressing issue in Malawi, where 60 percent of its people live below the poverty line and on less than a dollar a day. Famine threatened up to five million people in 2005 following drought, and the government spent over 100 million dollars to import food from South Africa and the region to avert hunger. Eritrean farmers herd a team of donkeys into the capital Asmara for the main weekly Saturday market on November 3, 2007. The red and blue logo of US-government food aid is a common sight in Eritrea. Donated grain sacks are re-stitched as popular shopping bags, while cooking oil tins bloom with colourful flowers on window sills. Any food inside, however, has long gone. This fiercely independent Horn of Africa country ended free distribution of food aid in 2005 after illegally seizing thousands of tonnes of grain, saying it was determined to feed itself without outside help.
